Your Sunday Countdown to Watermelon Day leads to less than 3 weeks for the 50th Stanhope Watermelon Day. And since we have been in the mood for Stanhope State Shout Outs, we end the weekend with a big one.

A humongous Stanhope State Shout Out goes to the Stanhope Lions Club. I wonder if the original organizers ever imagined that this event could keep going for 50 years. One of the big reasons for the longevity of this great event is the leadership and hard work of the Stanhope Lions Club. Of all of the great projects and causes that the Lions get involved in, this event is their baby.

So here’s to you Stanhope Lions, here’s to 50 more.

Countdown to Watermelon Day brings some hot inside scoop that you'll only read here before it hits the papers (awesome, we are like the Drudge Report of Stanhope now). Any how, one of our readers sent along this great announcement.

The Stanhope Lions have selected retired bus driver and longtime Lion member Dale Hanson to be the "Lion of the Year" and as such, he was recently presented a plague by Lion President Dean Larson. Lion Hanson will be the "Grand Marshal" for the 2007 Watermelon Day Parade.

A very special Stanhope State shout out to Dale. He was this Watermelon Warrior's bus driver from kindergarten to 2nd grade. Great tribute. Be sure to wave and tell Dale congrats at the parade this year.

The ever paddling Adam Brooks is at it again. Last year he kayaked the entire Mississippi River. This year he’s doing the Missouri River. What Exactly is Stanhope State?

Alright, the countdown continues... We have been getting a few emails asking what exactly is Stanhope State University. And what the heck is a Watermelon Warrior?

First, let’s tackle the Stanhope State thing…

The idea of Stanhope State University is a product of an old high school art assignment. It’s basically a spoof of the famous University of Okoboji t-shirts and sweatshirts created by the 3 Sons Shop up in Milford, IA.

From its origins of a sketch book drawing, Stanhope State University has evolved, mostly with only a few people knowing exactly what it is. We can report that Stanhope State is a very dominant team on NCAA Football for Playstation 2, a storied history of 9 national championships and 7 Heisman Trophy winners.

Later a Board of Governors was formed of 5 guys who hail from southern Hamilton County (all with some sort of Stanhope family ties) that live in the Des Moines Metro Area who meet a couple times a month… to discuss important issues of the day… um, basically a bunch of old friends stopping at a watering hole to catch the game of the week. But we can report important issues were discussed and fun had by all.

Then this nearly world famous central Iowa blog was created (snicker) as a “just for fun and hobby blog” to find cool articles about stuff going on back home. This blog has evolved into this online shrine to small towns.

So that’s the basic run down on what this crazy fictional university. But we are extremely excited to organize the first Stanhope State University All County Softball Tournament. Our hope is to have fun, start new traditions and get more people to check out the most awesome small town festival ever… Stanhope Watermelon Day.

The Original Version of the Watermelon Warrior Mascot

What is a Watermelon Warrior?

The Watermelon Warrior is the official mascot of Stanhope State University. According to legend, the Warrior is the great protector of those ice cold slices of watermelon served in the afternoon on Watermelon Day. Although never photographed, historians have attempted to produce a sketch of this mysterious fellow.

The Warrior has a shaved Mohawk and cut off sleeves, because it gets pretty warm at Watermelon Day. When protecting the stash of slices the Warrior usually only needs fists for protection, but he carries a lead pipe just in case things get out of hand. He always has his cleats on to be ready for a good game on the diamond, because Stanhope kids are known to be pretty darn good athletes.

So that’s a brief description of that exactly a Watermelon Warrior is. If you happen to catch a picture of the Warrior at the 50th Watermelon Day, please forward it on to share… though like we have said, the Watermelon Warrior has never been photographed.

Let the Countdown Begin!

Watermelon Day is right around the corner. So here at Stanhope State, we are going to do a daily countdown with updates on the Stanhope State All County Tournament presented by Young's Storage Center and other random notes.

First, the tournament is coming along great! We are finallizing the schedule and waiting to hear on a couple more teams. And rivalries are already starting! We can repeort that the Stanhope and Jewell teams are putting together some old school heavy weights to bring the trophy to their city hall. Which brings us to explain the tournament and idea.

At last year's Watermelon Day, Troy Johnson had an idea of bringing a softball tournament. Then we all starting thinking. Since it is the 50th Watermelon Day and it's Hamilton County's 150th birthday, we thought, "Why not an all county tournament?" Way back in the day every town had a baseball team. Take a glimpse at some old copies of the Record News some time. These reports about those those teams read like a 10:00pm Sportcenter.

Off of that idea, we decided to get a team from all parts of the county and compete for a traveling trophy, of which Young's Storage Center agreed to buy the trophy. You win the the tournament, you keep the trophy in your city hall and bring it back next year to defend it.

The entry fee is $50 and every team is guarenteed to play 2 games. We still have a couple slots left, so if you would like to enter in the tournament and defend your town's honor, let us know by calling Troy Johnson at 515-826-3253 or email troyjohn@netins.net.

Bring your best John Travolta impression to this year's Watermelon Day.

YEE HAW! The Watermelon Day Committee passed along that there will be a new feature this year, a mechanical bull. The bull will be open for riding from 1:00 to 4:00pm in the park. All ages are encouraged to try it. This new feature will be sure to form crowds as family and friends see how long they can stay on the bull. Don’t be surprised if you think you’re at Gilley’s at this year’s Watermelon Day… this is sure to be a great hit.

In case you haven’t totally circled it on your calendar, programed into your palm pilot or simply tatooed it to your hand, the 50th Stanhope Watermelon Day is Saturday, July 21st.

Is there a National Lionburger Month?

Just a quick fun post until we get back to some updates on the Tournament, Watermelon Day and everything else.

In case you didn't know, May is National Hamburger Month. Here's the scoop, click here.

This Watermelon Warrior's own mother has told me on numerous occations that if I kept eating as many hamburgers as I do, that I would indeed become a hamburger. I can report, still not a hamburger.

Does this mean July is the National Lionburger Month?

If it isn't, it should be. Nothing beats a Lionburger at Watermelon Day. I have no idea what those volunteers do to a simple loose meat sandwich... I just know they are dang good.

2007 is a year of celebration for the Stanhope community as this is the 50th year for Watermelon Day. A group of Stanhope residents is working to get a Stanhope State All County Softball Tournament started. Organizers are looking for two captains from each town to line up a team for the tournament. If you are willing to get involved, please contact Troy Johnson, Watermelon Day Committee Treasurer, 515-826-3253 or troyjohn@netins.net.

Young's Storage in Stanhope has agreed to do a traveling trophy that will be kept at the City Hall of the winning team. A website for the event has been created as well: stanhopestate.blogspot.com. This is a great way to play America’s game, get to know your neighbors, and have a lot of fun!

March Madness and More Updates on the Way!

It’s that time of year. While all of us at Stanhope State are anxiously waiting to fill out our brackets, we have been getting our fill of March Madness provided by the South Hamilton Hawks. A HUGE shout out to the South High wrestlers and basketball teams on great seasons!

Thanksgiving is in the books and its time for some Christmas shopping. We love spreading the love to the "best small town in the world" (Stanhope) and “God’s Country Iowa” (Southern Hamilton County). So here, the Board of Governors at Stanhope State University recommends these GREAT ideas for gifts and stops to make your Christmas, a Watermelon Warrior Christmas.

Good Eats
A new spot in downtown Jewell is Mishelle’s Food and Spirits. Mishelle serves up a huge menu, great prices and cool atmosphere. The décor is all old school Jewell. Old signs (two very nice big ones on the walls), pictures on the walls and on the bar, and the booths are made from the wood off of old barn in the Jewell area. Get the burgers there. We didn’t ask what they do to them, but they taste kind of like a deburgo or something. They are off the hook (this is good thing). Check out Mishelle’s and tell them the folks at Stanhope State sent you.

UPDATE We recieved an email from our favorite Fort lauderDodge Stanhope Stater Suzanne Schwendemann. She's a rep for Homemade Gourmet. We can attest the stuff she sells tastes great. Especially the salza she brought to the Young Family Christmas a couple of weeks ago (it was crazy good). Check out her site here. The Thanksgiving Vigil

We suspect everyone has gotten back to their normal schedule after Thanksgiving (and a GREAT Chiefs Victory!). As promised, we’re back to more regular posting!

A great tradition over the years (as we’re sure it is in other areas) is the “Thanksgiving Vigil.” The Thanksgiving Vigil is when everyone who has come home for Turkey Day gathers up at a local watering hole and catch up with former classmates and relatives the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving.

The Board of Governors at Stanhope State sent out their photographer and correspondents to one of the more happening spots last Wednesday, the NEW Jewell Golf & Country Clubhouse. There we found a couple hundred people getting an early start on spreading some holiday cheer and jamming on the karaoke machine. In attendance were old classmates, cousins, former teachers and members of our favorite rock ‘n roll band, 2 Feet Deep!

Our photographer and correspondents reported a lot of Stanhope State fans who have visited our humble site, and to them we give you all a huge Watermelon Warrior shout out.

WEEKEND SLICES

Alright we know, we know. It’s been a little… um, a long while since we have updated the site here at Stanhope State. Most of the Stanhope State team has been a little busy with their regular jobs. And yes, we promise to do a better job proof reading, ect… yeah, yeah, yeah.

So, to get caught up, we introduce a new feature for the Watermelon Warrior Nation, “Weekend Slices.” Its stories and sites we’ve found since our hiatus. We’ll return to regular posts and stories next week, until then grab a fork, a salt shaker and enjoy today’s slices.

SLICE 1: WATERMELON WARRIOR LOCAL MUSIC ALERTS

The administration office at Stanhope State received an email from our favorite rock ‘n roll band, 2 Feet Deep. They will be playing at Story City American Legion on Friday, December 8th. The first set starts at 9:00pm.

Newly appointed member of the Board of Governors at Stanhope State, Garren Zanker, has recently joined a great band call Blue Island Tribe out of Cedar Falls. This Watermelon Warrior has seen ‘em twice! They have a great island/reggae sound and are a fun band to watch They have a big gig coming up this Saturday at the 4th and Main in Cedar Falls. Check out their site to learn more.

At Stanhope State, we love great local and live music, if you don’t have any plans, get out and support these great bands and tell them the folks at Stanhope State sent you!

SLICE 2: TAKE A COUPLE OF GOOD JOURNEYS

Towards the end of this summer we came across a story in the Des Moines Register about South High alum, Adam Brooks. The story was about his lifelong dream of kayaking down the whole Mississippi River. Along the way he reflects about his hard times growing up. He updated his site with his thoughts and experiences through out his trip. This is a must read and great story of tragedy, triumph, and personal growth. Check it out his site and support the sponsors that helped make Adam’s dream come true.

A good buddy and former room mate of this Watermelon Warrior, Scott Stanzel, recently took a job as the Deputy White House Press Secretary. He’s an avid blogger and supporter of what we do here at Stanhope State (thanks again for the link man). A year ago this week Southeastern Hamilton County was hit by November tornados. The Webster City Daily Freeman Journal, or the “Screamin’ Freeman” as we affectionately call it, tells the stories of recovery and rememberence this week in Stratford. I just wanted to send a quick email out and let you know all is well here in cold, damp Iraq! Yeah, I bet most of you weren’t aware of the cold and rainy season they have here, but we are smack dab in the middle of it now. Lows in the 40’s, highs around 60. It’s not bad, but I thought it was all sand and sun here!

People and Catching Up

There's alot to that comes to mind when you are talking about Watermelon Day. The rides, the food, and games but there's one important factor that make it one of the best, the people. It's your family members that you see a few times a year or old classmates and friends from far and near. You talk about things from back in the day and what you've been up since the last Watermelon Day. Here's a few encounters from this Watermelon Warrior.

Ran into Jamie Berhow at the train ride. He was watching his youngest, Gunner James, go round and round on the train ride. "I'm probably gonna get sunburn," Jamie remarked. "This is his favorite ride. I keep telling him, 'Bud, there's other rides too' but he loves the train and probably won't get off for an hour."

Bumped into one of Boone's Bravest, Justin "Bubba" Adams and his wife Tracy. We were hashing old stories about running around town as kids. Bubba and Tracy are expecting their first child (a baby girl) this November. Congrats to Bubba and Tracy! See you and the little one at next year's Watermelon Day.

Talked to Vicki Hill at the bingo stand and told her about our story about Saratoga Days on this site. She mentioned we should put Stanhope's rock 'n roll band on our site. Done. Check out Two Feet Deep by clicking here.

Then as we were heading towards the watermelon stand we ran into avid readers of this site, Kathy and Dean Martensen. Gave us a few shout outs about our updates, so we send a shout out back!

I could go on forever about folks we ran into, but have to work Monday and would still be typing this post. Great to see a huge turn out and looking forward to seeing you all next year!

The Train Ordeal

You've read our guest post earlier from first timers Joe and Kathryn. After some coaxing from Adam and Sarah Young, they got them to ride one of our favorite rides, the train. Those of us in our crew were a little nervous, so we sent veteran train rider Sullivan Tighe (red shirt and wearing his ultra cool train shades) to supervise. Everyone boarded the train and they were off for a couple rounds until... it stopped en route.

What seemed to be a need for more gas... turned out to be that the train was just being a little fussy. Reports from the scene that we have gathered say that it is believed that this train has been used at every Watermelon Day since the beginning. Joe who was getting nervous told reporters later, " I kept thinking, jeez, my first ride and I break the thing." Above in the circle, Joe helps to push from the back. The train fired up and the returned back on its route.

All is well, as Joe and Kathryn were all smiles. Our expert rider, Sullivan, helped keep them calm throught the crisis... it's gotta be the shades.

Hitting the Park

After getting more than this Watermelon Warrior's fill of Lionburgers, it was time to test our luck at some of the game stands. Our crew headed over to the bingo stand. One buck gets you 3 cards, it was a good deal so we sat down and played the "Captial T" version of the game (which means you have to get all of the numbers on the top row left to right and all the numbers under the letter 'I').

It was firece competiton, you coould cu the intensity with a knife, then suddenly one of the folks in our crew yells, "BINGO!"

Since we had som out of staters with us, we hit the rides next. Thus, our next post is about "the Train Ordeal".

1st-Timer Weighs in on the Watermelon Day '06

This is a guest post from Kathryn Posch and Joe Gauer, from Kansas City, Missouri. They came up with Adam and Sarah Young (and future baby on the way!). This was Joe and Kathryn's first Watermelon Day. After a little bragging about one of the best small town festivals ever, they decided to come up and check out. Kathryn and Joe are getting married in September. Congrats Kathryn and Joe! We'll see you next year!

Hello Planet Earth! This is guest blogger and Watermelon Day First-Timer, Joe. I hail from 5 hours south of Stanhope in northwestern Missouri and decided to make the first of many annual pilgrimmages to the promised land for unique experience. As a long-time watermelon enthusiast, I had thought I'd seen everything when it came to watermelon.

But as we speak, I am knee-deep in every kind of watermelon you could imagine -- seeded, seedless, pink, reddish-pink, and many more varieties I'd love to get in to but just don't have the time. I mugged for several personal photos, but was caught unaware when the press snapped the picture that may or not make it to the cover of the Record News (note: this out of towner almost upset many of you by referring to it as simply the "Stanhope Record News" but found out it covered many area towns thanks to local celebrity Adam Young. My apologies...)

My scorecard for the event:

Watermelon: A+
Ambience: "Slice of the good life" indeed
Kiddie Train Ride: Suprisingly dangerous for someone 6' 200 lbs. (we'll post the "Train Ordeal" later)
Overall experience: Loved it!

UPDATE #9 - Parade is done... LET'S EAT!

While we missed a ton of other great floats, we end our coverage here as Tilford and his parade team wrap up the parade with his sign, "Thank You For Coming!"

One of the "Hamilton County's Finest" in a Ellsworth-Jewell-Stanhope PD squad car opens up Highway 17 (Parker Street) back to its regular traffic schedule. Let's head to the food!

After the parade everyone heads to the food stand. The lines get long at first, but the wait is well worth it. Homemade pies, hot dogs, annd yes the Famous Stanhope Lionburger. Above is the Young clan table, after the parade.

Now before PETA freaks out on us, a Lionburger isn't made of lion... its your basic made-rite beef burger. You know, Watermelon Day is put on by the Lions... made by volunteers and club members, so its a Lionburger, get it? Now I don't know what those volunteers do to this simple loose meat sandwich... but they are just dang good, I had 3.

Now lets hit some rides and games...

THE FAIR IS AROUND THE CORNER: It was great to see this Watermelon Warrior's old 4-H Club in the parade. Looks like they still have some creative kids building things for their events. Oh the memories, right? Good to see you guys, it takes me back.

THE PIANO MAN (or kids): Here was a great entry from Amazing Grace Piano Studio. I heard the music coming down the route and thought, "This has got to be a CD palying." Sure enough I was wrong, it was these kids jammin' on the keyboard with a little ragtime bit. Great stuff!

BETTER THAN THE BEST BEEF JERKY IN THE WORLD: Stanhope Locker was out in force at the parade (I'm sure they are OUT of jerky by now, looking at the time now. They should be on the Register's list of the "100 Things in Iowa You Should Eat Before You Die" list as we explained on this link: click here.

CLASS OF 1956: Here's the Stanhope High Class of 1956 with their out house in which they post a sign that says, "50 Years of Being Out!" Congrats on your 50th Year Reunion.

What's a parade without Shriners? Here the Zag-A-Zig, music truck that provides festive background music at Watermelon Day every year. Sponsored by the Stanhope Development Group.

FREEDOM ISN'T FREE: Here's the entry from the Hamilton County Military Families Support Group. It was great to see them as they blared "Proud to be an American" by Lee Greenwood. Today, when you enjoying another slice of Watermelon or playing another round of bingo, take a minute to think about the men and women in uniform and Veterans who make it possible for all of us to enjoy a day of fun in Stanhope and every where across this great country.

ONLY IN IOWA: For our out of state readers, this is a manure spreader. Yes an antique one. Just had to share.

Update #6 - This was a big parade..

What's a parade with politicians, right? Here's the Hamilton County Republicans (nice paint job on the float by the way!). Native Stanhopean and Hamilton County Supervisor David Young and others walked in the parade. We try to stay bi-partisan here at Stanhope State, but for some reason the University's camera would work when the Democrats entry went by, oh well...

Here was nifty chruch entry from Our Savior's Luthern Church, Jesus (in the white wearing a ball cap) and the Boys (Apostles?). They stopped along the route, Jesus would raise his arms, and 'the Boys' squirted super soakers.

Here's the RED HOT entry from Young's Storage Center & Harcourt Equipment. A 1963 Buick Le Sabre, almost restored to its 'off the line' look. Just back from the Buick Club of America's National Convention in Rochester, Minnesota. Where proud owner Rick Young won one of the "Most Traveled" Award for actually driving this classic up to the event. A Big Shout Out to Rick for this honor.

LIVE Update #4 - Parade and Fire Trucks

Watermelon Day is under way. After a few technical difficulties (needing bateries, thanks to the folks at Sparky's for their swift service), we got the Stanhope State camera up and going.

What beautiful weather! After a week of "Hotter than Fort Dodge" conditions, it was purfect weather for the parade. We spoke with Tilford Teig (one of the parade organizers) about the parade at the raffle stand. He was excited to see so many entries and an even bigger crowd for the parade this year. Now some highlights from the parade.

It's not a parade without fire trucks and this parade had a lot. Here's one of the rigs from "Stanhope's Bravest" the Stanhope Volunteer Fire and rescue. Lookin' sharp guys!

One of the other towns that entered a truck was this tanker courtesy of "Jewell's Bravest."

Around here people never forget, and once again the Straford folks showed how classy they are by simply thanking all in area who help with the tornado clean up. Shout out to "Stratford's Bravest."

LIVE Post #2 - Watermelon Day Update

The Day Before Update

Our correspondents headed over from the Jewell extention office of Stanhope State University to check out the final planning. Rumor was there was some balloons to be made for one of the popular stands, the Dart Stand. But after a few years of hours of blowing up balloons, they decided to go with circles. They painted the circles in maroon in honor of South High.

So what was supposed to be a preview, preporation post for Watermelon Day, turned into a Watermelon Day Eve mini tailgate with family.

And in the end, the core of Watermelon Day is about family, reunions and cathing up. Fun was had by all and we found some good scoop.

GOOD SCOOP
We have learned that one of the younger members of the Watermelon Warrior Nation, Carter Young (AKA the 'the Carter Man') will be driving the first float in tomorrow's parade. The float is a small gas engine Model T replica pulling a gigantic watermelon. From what our correspondents have learned, this was a reward. Young Carter, 9 years old, has been volunteering for his Grandma Robert at another Stanhope Icon, "Wednesday Night in the Park." Kudos to Carter for this honor and his work this week helping the guy set up for the 49th Watermelon Day.

LIVE Post #1 - The Eve of Watermelon Day

First Update: Stanhope Alumni Banquet

Our first update makes a stop through Ellsworth. I wonder if the "bunch who beat Ellsworth 3-2" were there. Tonight the alumni of Stanhope High School gather for their annual banquet. This event always kicks off the Watermelon Day Festivities.

This correspondent was on his way back from the Stanhope State Extention office in Des Moines. So I decided just swing by and gage what kind of crowd they were having tonight. Although I didn't go in (we didn't want to crash the event), from this Watermelon Warriors' estimate, it had to be a full house. Cars and pickups were lined up and down the street, plus the parking area was packed.

Now this Watermelon Warrior wasn't even born when graduating classes were roming the halls of Stanhope High, but I have been told a little history. To make sure I got my facts straight, I checked the history section on the Stanhope Website and here's what i found:

In 1893 the first school in town limits was erected. It first employed Miss Belle Iverson as teacher and Mrs. Olmstead as the first principal. Mr. Fred Runkle came in 1902 as superintendent. He expanded the curriculum to include the first year of high school. There were three teachers by that time: Mr. Runkle, superintendent and higher grades; Pearl Watson, intermediate grades; and Belle Iverson, primary grades. In 1914 an eight-room brick building was constructed on school grounds. In 1923 four more classrooms and a gymnasium were added. Then again in 1952 four more rooms were added.

In 1958, the school districts of Ellsworth, Randal, Stanhope, and Jewell were combined into the present South Hamilton School District in Jewell, Iowa. The last graduating class in the Stanhope Community School was in 1962. Ultimately, the brick school building and gymnasium was torn down and the Park View Apartments were constructed on the old school grounds.

Additionally, they were known as the Stanhope Vikings. Largely because of the the majority of the first Stanhopeans came from Norway and Sweden. The school colors were blue and white. We'll try to get some pictures of some vintage Stanhope High gear this weekend.

The Register Missed One... Big Time!

The Sunday Des Moines Register had a very popular article entitled, "100 Things to Eat in Iowa Before You Die," you can read the list by clicking on this link: http://desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060709/ENT02/607090306/1048.

While they did compile a very impressive list (We double concur with Mabe's Pizza in Decorah and The Steak Taco at Tasty Taco in Des Moines), but they forgot one Central Iowa's legendary snacks, the World Famous Stanhope Beef Jerky from the Stanhope Locker.

Now, there are hundreds of others that probably didn't make the cut and we are sure they are all great. But how can you say that Stanhope Beef Jerky didn't break the top 100?

Remembering Saratoga Days

One of this Watermelon Warrior’s favorite past times is hitting antique stores to find vintage stuff from the South Hamilton area, and recently I found this great old school hat.

This hat is from the famous Saratoga Days that were held north of Stanhope back in the day. And since this Watermelon Warrior was too young to remember the exact details, I contacted Stanhope Mayor Harold Hove (one of the original organizers of the event) to get a little background on an old summer tradition.

Saratoga Days were kind of like another Watermelon Day and from other accounts I have gathered, just another good reason to throw a great party (hey, we can’t argue with that). It was held on a property northeast of Stanhope near the Boone River Valley, where now Dr. Marty Hove recently had his Medical School Graduation Party. The event was free with everything donated and drew crowds from all over the area. The hat pictured above was sold to help raise money for the event. They also held an annual raffle to help keep the event free to everyone who showed up.

Festivities started at 10:30am with a parade on the gravel road in front of the Saratoga Days grounds. There’s no false advertising in the hat above. According to Harold, there were games for the kids and tons of food. They usually went through 2 hogs and 8 turkeys. One year in addition to the hogs and turkeys, they even barbequed a goat! Of course, beverages were all around as they went through at least 12 kegs of beer each year. The day of partying ended with a huge bonfire on the Saratoga Days grounds.

Funny Recipes From Jewell

A couple of weeks ago, Jewell celebrated its 125th Birthday over the annual Jewell Jubilee Days. While attending the festivities we came across the official Jewell Quasquicentennial Cookbook. This Watermelon Warrior can’t wait to start to try some of the great recipes found in this great cookbook.

While reading through the cookbook, we found a couple humorous recipes that we just had to share with the Watermelon Warrior Nation.

“Spencer’s 2 A.M. Surprise!” Submitted by Spencer Hill

Scour Fareway ads for Totino pizza specials. Go buy. Take out of box. Remove plastic. Put pizza in oven for 12 minutes. Remove. Cut pizza to taste. Take 3 bites. Have a glass of milk. Go to bed. Throw out pizza.

“Troy’s Pheasant Feast” Submitted by Troy Swenson

Ingredients: 1 can cream of chicken soup, 1 can of water, wild rice (use at discretion), Stuffing (opt.)

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Mix all ingredients in 9x13 inch pan. Cover with aluminum foil. Bake 45 minutes to 1 ½ hours until done. After 2 hours, throw out and order a Casey’s pizza.

These funny recipes and tons of very delicious recipes in this book are still on sale at Family Pharmacy in Jewell. The Board of Governors at Stanhope State strongly endorse this book. Pick it up and get cooking!

A SHOUT OUT TO OUR FRIENDS TO THE WEST

Almost 6 months ago Stanhope's sister city to the west, Stratford, was ravaged by fall tornadoes. Just weeks following the mess with Hurricane Katrina, the people of Southern Hamilton County Iowa showed the World how to deal with a natural disaster with impeccable class, dignity and courage. No complaining, no blaming, just neighbors and complete strangers showing up to ask what they could do to help.

GET YOUR DUCKS IN A ROW - Gearing up for the 49th Watermelon Day

Are you ready for the best small town celebration ever? The word is some of you are. The Board of Governors office has received confirmation that the Robert Young family is gearing up for a family float for this year’s Watermelon Day Parade.

Young family cousins, aunts and uncles are going with the theme, “Get Your Ducks in a Row.” Why ducks? Only in honor of one of the staple games in the Park, the Duck Pond. The Young family hopes to inspire other families in Stanhope do the same for the 50th Watermelon Day in 2007. Kind of in the fashion of most St. Patrick’s Day parades where families show off their heritage with their family crest, or their favorite thing about Watermelon Day, or any other creative idea to show their love for the greatest small town ever.

Watermelon Day, for most current and past resident Stanhopeans, is a homecoming for families who have been around Stanhope for a long time. You get to see a lot of folks you only see once a year. Yes, there is a lot of, “Hey I remember when you were this tall,” or “What are you up to these days.” Topped with a ton of good old fashion family fun and don’t for get the famous Lion burgers.

So because Stanhope is the greatest small town ever, and it will be hosting the 50th greatest small town celebration ever, those of us on campus hope other families will follow suit with their own entry in 2007.

CAMPUS NOTE: We will post the progress on the float and post pictures as we get closer this summer and the Board of Governors at Stanhope State will be live posting through out the day, PLUS there is talk of the University entering its own entry. Stay tuned for more updates!

2006 Football Schedule

The Athletic Department is proud to release the 2006 Stanhope State Watermelon Warrior Football Schedule. The returning 2005 Hamilton Athletic Conference (HAC) Champions return with one of the toughest schedules in Division 1-A according to Sports Illustrated. The Watermelon Warrior Nation is also gearing up to take in the new Stanhope Park (located on Stanhope’s Westside), which should be finished for the September opener with UNI.

This grueling schedule will bode well for the Warriors ticket back to the National Title game. Season tickets are on sale starting today while single game tickets will be available to the public on May 1. For availability contact the Watermelon Warrior Ticket Office at stanhopestate@yahoo.com .

We got an interesting comment today nominating Tony Danza as the patron saint for Stanhope. Tony was nominated by "Chanel's Momma", and I couldn't agree with her more. I mean come on, everyone loves Tony Danza!
